Barbizon, a village of artists and charm

A stay at Château d’Augerville will lead art and history buffs into the footsteps of the Impressionist painters in the charming village of Barbizon.

Artists, seduced by the wild beauty of the natural landscape of the Fontainebleau forest, made this town, located 32 kilometers from the Château d’Augerville, their place of vacation and creation. The “Barbizon School”, a movement of landscape painters between 1825 and 1875, was a major inspiration for famous Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir.

A museum established in the Auberge Ganne, where artists stayed during their visits to Barbizon, traces the history of this prolific artistic period.

Nicknamed “the painters’ village” at the time, the town is now home to numerous artists and galleries.

An opportunity to discover the different architectural styles of this French landmark, the scene of major episodes in French history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with its sumptuous grounds).
